Definition of the cyberpunk music genre?
Since “cyberpunk” is primarily a visual and literary genre, any music that exhibits synergy with the genre’s central themes of technology, industry, and “grimness,” alternative culture, dysfunctional society, etc. is considered to be cyberpunk. However, as you already mentioned, cyberpunk music can take many different forms.
Due to its technological nature, a sizable portion of techno and electronic music may be dubbed “cyberpunk” by anyone so inclined. Incorporating rock music with industrial and other techno influences is also encouraged by the griminess/social breakdown component. These “human-fronted” behaviors also clearly reflect one of cyberpunk’s main themes: how technology affects people.
As a result, “cyberpunk” is currently a catch-all phrase encompassing a variety of musical subgenres, including techno, industrial, and industrial rock.
